In other news, we might start watching Sense8.
This week in "so crazy it just might work," xHamster has offered to take over production of doomed Netflix series Sense8. Alex Hawkins, xHamster vice president, wrote to Lilly and Lana Wachowski to plead xHamster's case: "With Netflix unwilling to renew the series, but with the story left untold, xHamster is offering the Wachowskis an unusual, but maybe fitting production partner—us." There's nothing xHamster hates more than an incomplete story. Happy endings for all.
"xHamster is currently one of the most trafficked websites on the internet," Hawkins wrote in his letter, "We have the eyeballs, and the revenue." Horny eyeballs, sure, but eyeballs all the same. He went on to explain that Sense8, "a series about polymorphous perversity," is actually a great fit for xHamster. Unlike Netflix, Hawkins wrote, xHamster understands "the interconnectedness of sexualities across boundaries." It's true: show me a film on Netflix that demonstrates the interconnectedness of sexualities across boundaries better than "mature BBW mom fucking and sucking not her son."
Hawkins told GQ that while he wouldn't expect Sense8 to be traditional porn, with the storyline taking a back seat, he does feel that creating a series for Netflix can be limiting. "Sense8 is already a very sex-forward show," Hawkins told me, "but I do think that it could be more explicit. But really, that's up to the Wachowskis and the actors. We just want to be a platform for their vision."
Hawkins explained that xHamster is built on choice, and he imagines Sense8 as a more user-driven experience. "Some viewers may want to see more aggressive, extended versions of the sex scenes, while others may find them slow-moving. On a platform like ours, it's really easy to give people options." That agency, Hawkins said, is what Sense8 is all about. "When you think about it, a site like xHamster IS a sensate. We are millions of people, connected by sexuality, from across the world."
Hawkins might just really, really like Sense8, but the proposal is worth a thought. If I've learned anything from all the PR emails I've gotten from PornHub & Co., it's that porn sites have incredible insights into their consumers' viewing habits and preferences. With that kind of user data and the aforementioned legions of eyeballs, xHamster could be a formidable player in streaming. As Hawkins pointed out in his letter, "Five years ago, people laughed at the idea of Netflix producing original series." Maybe in a few years xHamster will come upon a few Emmy nominees.
