Well, i have a really great time watching "Strange magic". My brothers, my sister and i had a great time watching it at the cinema. It seems we were lucky because some cities didn't project it. I think it would have been a waste, not because it's a Lucasfilm production but because it was entertaining. The voices actors, songs and story are excellent. I was surprised to see so many bad reviews. I like the animation, the characters were fun and gosh the songs are so good (some of them are great classics)!! The story seems to be based on the universal theme of love; love doesn't have color, race, gender, etc. Not original but it was okay. And Maryann isn't the kind of princess you can dislike. I can't wait to buy the DVD.

First, comment on one star ratings. I can see where children under the age of six (6) or so might not be as captivated as they would be for PBS style kids' programming: expecting simple graphics and age readability appropriate dialogue such as few syllables; short sentences; concrete familiar references; simple, not abstract concepts. Add to this mix some scary visuals. Also, some of the songs are teen and above. So ? Second, for all ages (except above mentioned) the blend of straight dialogue with pop music (some oldies; some newer) dialogue to move the story forward was artfully blended. Admittedly I didn't quite get it in the beginning, but I was able to overcome some of my dumbness and learned to appreciate it. The singing vocal quality from the voice actors was surprisingly good. Third, computer hardware and graphics' programs continue to evolve and are producing scaringly realistic animations: surfaces, modeling, mattes, compositing naturalistic movement. Kudos to all involved. Fourth, the film's messages of seeing in a new way; looking under the surface; love - all make the film worth watching just for that reason.
Strange Magic was a delight and while there is a lot of music from the past six decades they fit well within the context of the story and had deep meaning. For those whom haven't seen it nor read or seen any spoilers there's a great surprise. The US trailer didn't do it any justice, but the ploy certainly kept me from guessing and it was a surprise I thoroughly enjoyed. Not since Shrek first came out have I loved a movie so or watched it so many times. Some people dislike it, some people love it. I haven't seen any in between, but the story pulls one in and for those who've experienced anything like the main characters went through then this is a story you'll definitely want to watch. You still may not like it, especially if you don't enjoy the songs and their renditions.
Just because there's less dialog and a whole lot of singing doesn't detract from the plot... it helps to tell the story. And there's so many details one misses if they only watch it once. An expression. A parallel. Sometimes even the meaning to a song or the sound of the music without the lyrics to go with them. It may also ruin all perceptions of who one believes the villain to be. Give the movie a try or three and think about the meaning and not about how long or short something took instead think of the character(s) actions. It really is a fun movie with heart and soul and leaves a number of viewers longing for more, to wonder what happens next. And realize too that there is character development throughout no matter how subtle it might seem, its there for those who dare to look for it.
The animation in this is wonderful. Some might say its ugly, but human-like expressions can be ugly, even creepy. But all the faeries (save one) always look fine to me if a bit disgruntled or angry. The goblins themselves are phenomenally done. Ergo I believe this to be one of the best animated movies out there and even if it wasn't... I came for the story not necessarily the aesthetic. And personally while I love the tough fairy princess my favorite character above all would have to be The Bog King. How can I adore the villain so much over the heroes? Well, one would only have to but watch the movie to figure that out.
