After reading a few reviews I was not expecting to think much of this movie, but I was pleasantly surprised. I loved it. This movie is rated PG and it knows its audience: families. It manages to do something many movies fail at: it relies on entertainment instead of gratuitous violence. First of all, the look of the film, the creativity and range of the character design, and the animation, all very well executed. Because the movie is packed with innovative arrangements (and I must say some wonderful performances) of popular songs old and new, the story must remain simple, but it is not only solid, it incorporates some very funny as well as some sparkling and simultaneously touching moments. This is a musical. Think Sondheim meets animation. Live theater goers will rejoice! For this I would say it is innovative and very different, and perhaps brave, because it attempts to break new ground. I found at the beginning I felt there was too much singing, darn it! But I realized that in itself became part of the story, integral to the Fairy world, and much light is made if it later. I too, wished the uglier characters were more beautiful, but I realize that -- this also, is the point of the story! It's definitely a journey you do not expect to take. This movie is bold, beautiful, and goes where no man has gone recently. It talks about loving others, no matter their creed, color or... well, species, and some may find that scary. It is positive, uplifting, creative, moving, innovative, and refreshing. Bring a hankie if you cry at love stories. History will smile on this movie for taking a chance that there is an audience out there who still feels. Don't listen to the crankster critics. In this movie, life is beautiful, and everything it should be.

Strange Magic was a delight and while there is a lot of music from the past six decades they fit well within the context of the story and had deep meaning. For those whom haven't seen it nor read or seen any spoilers there's a great surprise. The US trailer didn't do it any justice, but the ploy certainly kept me from guessing and it was a surprise I thoroughly enjoyed. Not since Shrek first came out have I loved a movie so or watched it so many times. Some people dislike it, some people love it. I haven't seen any in between, but the story pulls one in and for those who've experienced anything like the main characters went through then this is a story you'll definitely want to watch. You still may not like it, especially if you don't enjoy the songs and their renditions.
Just because there's less dialog and a whole lot of singing doesn't detract from the plot... it helps to tell the story. And there's so many details one misses if they only watch it once. An expression. A parallel. Sometimes even the meaning to a song or the sound of the music without the lyrics to go with them. It may also ruin all perceptions of who one believes the villain to be. Give the movie a try or three and think about the meaning and not about how long or short something took instead think of the character(s) actions. It really is a fun movie with heart and soul and leaves a number of viewers longing for more, to wonder what happens next. And realize too that there is character development throughout no matter how subtle it might seem, its there for those who dare to look for it.
The animation in this is wonderful. Some might say its ugly, but human-like expressions can be ugly, even creepy. But all the faeries (save one) always look fine to me if a bit disgruntled or angry. The goblins themselves are phenomenally done. Ergo I believe this to be one of the best animated movies out there and even if it wasn't... I came for the story not necessarily the aesthetic. And personally while I love the tough fairy princess my favorite character above all would have to be The Bog King. How can I adore the villain so much over the heroes? Well, one would only have to but watch the movie to figure that out.
OK so we have gone to see this movie at theater like 8 times !!!! My daughter (5year old) loves it!!!!! She keeps asking me to this day to take her to watch it again .... Here in El Paso ...I haven't seen it for sale in DVD yet ...but it WILL be a MUST have for US .... I mean for my daughter ... ?? .. .nah I loved it too .... I love the songs they sing in the movie ..I really do recommend it .....you might find it very entertaining even for an adult and I'm 30 by the way
